The ambiguity of beauty: on the ontological indeterminacy of the aesthetic object

Abstract
This paper posits the ontological indeterminacy of the aesthetic object. Revisiting the origins of philosophical aesthetics, it confronts the idea of beauty as “perfection of sensible knowledge” that Alexander G. Baumgarten developed in his Aesthetica (1750) with the paragraphs of the Kritik der Urteilskraft (1790) in which Immanuel Kant distinguishes beauty from the concept of perfection. and differentiates “pulchritudo vaga” from “pulchritudo adhaerens”. It then it focuses on Kant’s examples of “free beauty” and finally addresses the aporia of the "objet ambigu" presented by Paul Valéry in his dialogue Eupalinos, ou l’Architecte (1921) in the light of the analyses of Hans Blumenberg and Hans-Robert Jauss.
