The exemplarity of Socrates according to Plato and Xenophon
Main Article Content
Abstract
In the work of Xenophon, Socrates is a model of virtue to be imitated by those who aspire to acquire the virtues that he embodies. Hence, the exemplarity of Socrates is essentially that of a model that can be imitated. Plato’s Socrates never plays the role of a model to be imitated for those who aspire to virtue, no doubt because for Plato’s Socrates virtue is not the result of an exercise (askêsis). If virtue essentially consists of knowledge, then it is useless to imitate Socrates, since such an imitation does not procure any knowledge.
